How about some inspirational pictures to help give you some ideas to write. Here’s a collection of weather pictures that are truly awe inspiring. Now, time to practice writing.

Here’s the first exercise that can be more difficult that it seems. Describe the picture. And do it with some author flair. Don’t just say “bolts of lightning striking the ground.” Give it something to make it unique and your own. How about “Blistering streaks bursting upon the ground” or “Arow from the clouds brightening the decrepit barn as if the sun had supernova’d”. Something. It’s good practice, and I’m sure you can come up with better examples. Give it more than 1 sentence – write an entire paragraph so that if someone read it and then looked at a bunch of similar pictures, they’d be able to pick your picture out.

Next, what’s the story in the picture. Most likely, this isn’t the beginning of the story, but it could be. Who is in that car and where are they going? What is that house almost struck by lighting. Why is that boat out in that storm? Are there still animals in the barn? Was someone walking on those streets and why? Figure out the story – the weather isn’t the story. The weather is a complication or a major hurdle. Maybe it affects the entire story or only a piece of it. What’s the story?

Here are some weather pictures to start. Feel free to use any others you may have.
