Can the kids help an author come up with some great stories?

Emma wants a boat for her fishing trips. When she finds a bag of gold, it seems her dreams will come true. That is, until others come looking for the gold.

Twins Sam and Sara both want to ride their horses in the upcoming race. After arguing, a more desperate race takes place – one that is life or death.

Ethan didn’t want to move and doesn’t like his new house. Then the noises start. What is in the attic and what is taking his toy cars?

This is a collaboration from a school workshop. I worked with the kids on story structure, and they helped shape several stories which resulted in this book. Fantastical tales from fantastical minds.

The kids supplied the ideas and learned how to place them within a basic story structure, including how to decide if an idea should be taken out. Then I wrote out their stories for them to read.

The proceeds from this book go back to the Southeast Middle School Library for more books that kids can enjoy.

What you hold in your hands is a collaboration of sorts. In May of 2023, I visited Southeast Local Schools in Portage County Ohio. I worked with the kids on the 3three parts of story. We developed ideas and shaped those ideas into a story. Several of the library classes for Mrs. O’Connor helped me come up with some fresh story ideas.

These kids were overflowing with ideas. We worked hard to focus on a complete story with a beginning, middle, and end. The basic story structure served as our guide to what happened in the stories.

We talked about the start of a story to introduce the characters and lead to a big conflict. Then we figured out some story ideas for the middle. They needed to have some activities that would lead to the end. And at the end, we needed a big climax. Let the main character fix whatever happened with the conflict.

I think the kids succeeded brilliantly. We made notes and had to toss out ideas that didn’t fit. All ideas were great, but they also learned to make sure all parts help the story along.

Afterwards, the kids entrusted me to flesh it out. What you hold in your hands is that collaboration. Three stories, crafted by the kids, and brought to life by me. You can see the creativity of these kids and the vast difference in the stories that each group landed upon.
